Today is day I love to celebrate. This year Mary’s non-profit is holding a volunteer day to help build a local playground. Both Monica and I will be helping Mary wrangle volunteers, plant trees and shrubs, and be thankful that we have/had people in this world who are compassionate, strong, and forward moving.
Is anyone else celebrating today?

It seems we’re all super busy and not really posting. Yet I still check EOJ! So I just wanted to make a “non-post” post to say: YAY!

The above is a screen capture from a Dunkin Donuts ad featuring Rachel Ray. Notice her scarf? Yeah, apparently that scarf equals symbolic support for Islamic Extremists. DD has since pulled the ad, as they don’t want to offend anyone. First off: How could anyone ever think that Rachel Ray or Dunkin Donuts had terrorist leanings? What the hell could be more American than sugary fried dough with jelly in them, being hocked by an attractive, smiling girl?
It’s pretty safe to say that the people making these accusations are crazy. I’m sure that plenty of ad campaigns get crazy feedback for ridiculous things like this, just as any TV show is going to get negative comments from time to time. The fact that Dunkin Donuts is pulling the ads says that they are suddenly listening to the crazy people that really don’t have a leg to stand on… it takes a special kind of paranoia to spot this sort of thing, and giving into it is truely letting the terrorists win.
I had cous-cous for dinner a couple nights ago… should I pack my bags for gitmo?

Last night I woke up at about 4:30 in the morning and the house was shaking. The bed, the wall, even the ceiling mounted light fixture was chattering. The first thing I though was that someone had driven a car into the side of the house. I don’t know why I thought that. I jumped up and went outside to see, but the house was still shaking and then I thought “we had to buy mine insurance because there are abandon coal mines under the whole town”. So as I opened the front door I was thinking that the house was sinking into the ground. By this time the shaking had stopped. Outside everything was normal. No car lodged in the side of the house, no gapping whole in the ground to swallow us up. Just some tittering birds and some recycling bins. When I woke up this morning I found out it was a earthquake (5.4). That was definitely not something I expected to experience when I moved to Illinois.
